Pre Tokugawa Shogunate
Although there were no battles that occured DURING the Edo Era, it took many to
begin it. Japan had been in a Civil War between Master and Master, Shogun and
Shogun, for decades. Finally, after many battles, someone won.

The Battle of Sekigahara-1600
Daimyo Tokugawa Ieyasu (spelt with a capital i), along with Oda Nobunaga, defeated their rivals in this battle. The main enemy was Ishida Mitsunari, the leader of the Western Coalition. He was gaining on Ieyasu, and signalled for the Kobayakawa Hideaki allies for support. However, the did now show up due to their former alliance with Ieyasu. And because his other ally, the Mori clan, had abandoned them, he began to lose ground. When the Kobayakawa finally came, it was to attack Mitsunari from the rear. by the end of the battle. Ieyasu had won and became master of Japan. He then became Shogun three years later.
The Battle of Tennoji- 1615
To follow up the Battle of Sekigahara, Ieyasu and Oda planned to siege Osaka and take out Toyotomi Hideyori, one of the last remaining rivals. Toyotomi planned to counterattack them as well. They got into battle, and although both sides made terrible mistakes that lead their men to suffer, Toyotomi commited suicide (probably thru Seppuku). Ieyasu had won yet again.
